Which translation plugin to choose? WPML? Polylang? Something else...

Hi Richard, since I want to make my site multi language (at least Dutch and English, may be German too), what plugin can you advice - in relation to future development of the plugin? WPML? Polylang? Something else?

I have a slight preference for WPML, since I have the 'feeling' it integrates best with WooCommerce; but that's just a feeling...

WPML is probably the overall best to go for. I'm not sure if my plugin will work with it, but my plugin is translatable. I'd like to get proper compatibility with WPML at some point through their programme, it's just getting round to it.

Hi Richard, you say: "my plugin is translatable". Does that mean I can use the plugin at one site, in 2 or 3 different languages? Or does it mean I can use it at site A in Dutch, and at site B in English?

It means someone can make a translation file for all of the strings in my plugin, into a different language. I can then include that in the plugin so the text will change to a supported language automatically.

For example someone could create a German translation file and if it's included in my plugin any German sites will have all the strings set to German.

Hi Richard, not sure if I understand...

If I provide a Dutch translation file, and a German file: can I then make one multilanguage site with e.g. WPML, where the plugin will show the right translated strings automatically - depending on which language flag the visitor has clicked (or which browser language the site has detected)?

I believe that's how it works.

It also means that all the strings in my settings page will match the site language by default, for example a German site with a German translation file included. Rather than them all being English as they are now on yours.

    Allright! Sounds great!

Once you've got files that can be translated, just send them to me; I would love to take care of the Dutch translation and German should be no problem too 😉
